ADAMS, GILBERT RAYMOND
Gilbert Raymond Adams, 79, born June 22, 1934 in Amarillo Texas, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Sunday, February 23, 2014. He had been under hospice care since December 25th. Gil is survived by Diane Ellingen Adams, his wife of 58 years, and Santa Barbara High School sweetheart class of '52; children Allene, Mike and Maryellen; grandchildren Mandy, Nick, Matthew and Katie; brother Paul; brother-in-law Mike; daughter-in-law Pam; son-in-law Andrew. He is beloved to them as a most devoted husband, father, brother and Poppy.
In 1953 Gil enlisted in the Navy where he served in the Pacific during the closing days of the Korean War. He served 4 years active duty as a Navy musician in the 7th Fleet Band, and 4 years in the reserves. Later he attended UC Santa Barbara where he earned a teaching credential and BA degree.
A 54 year resident of San Gabriel Valley, Gil started his music teaching career in the Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District at Los Altos High School in 1960. In 1966 he transferred to Glen A. Wilson High School (GWHS) where he was the Music Department Chair until his retirement in 1997. Career highlights included extensive traveling with the Band to England, Spain, Scotland, Australia, Hawaii, Italy, France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The Band had the honor of representing the State of California in President Regan's 2nd Inaugural. They also had the privilege of performing in the Rose Parade on 3 occasions. Mr. "A", as he is affectionately known by many score of students, was awarded the District's Teacher of the Year Award for the 1975 – 1976 school year. The Band Room at GWHS proudly bears his name.
Gil's affiliations include life member VFW Post 1944, the American Legion Post 0291, and Southern California Band and Orchestra Association.
He had a close personal relationship with God since he was converted at age 8. Gil was a man of good humor and great character who never met a stranger. He had a strong appreciation for family, music and education. His tenacity, sense of humor and trust in others was an inspiration to all. He led a blessed life.
A service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 9:00am in the SkyRose Chapel at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier CA. Reception to follow from 1:00 – 5:00pm at the Knott's Berry Farm Hotel. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the WIM Club, attention Jonathan Chang, at GWHS; 16455 E.
