Donald L. Betz, 79, passed away April 29, 2003 in Seattle.
He was born April 1, 1924 in Hastings, NE. He was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Betz. Don served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Aleutian Islands, Anacortes, Chicago and Florida. After Don's honorable discharge, he and Mari took up residence in Chicago, IL., where he eventually went to work for The Continental Baking Company. His promotion to sales manager brought him to Seattle in 1954 where he continued to work for 27 years. Together with Mari, they established Mari-Don Healthway Natural Foods in the Pike Place Market and Wallingford District. Don had held local, state and national offices for The Sons of Italy. He was a 30 year member of The Sons of Italy Lodge #1369 where had served as Lodge president. Don also served as the State Lodge President and National Delegate and was elected as a National Foundation Member. Over the years, Don was a member of the Italian Club and the West Side Civic Club. Along with Mari, he had been active in St. Benedict Parish since 1954. Don's passion for travel, and love of his family resulted in numerous trips criss-crossing America. In the process he became a lover of history and geography, eventually traveling to Western Europe and The Caribbean.
Don will be missed for his sense of humor, warm personality, his gentle manner, logic and sense of fair play. Above all, Don's love of family will always be remembered.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Mari Betz; sons Don Betz (Susanne), Bob Betz (Cathy), and Tom Betz (Cindy); and six grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be Sunday, May 4, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Chapel, 11111 Aurora Ave. N., Seattle, with committal services to follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. A reception will follow at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 4415 S. 140th , Tukwilla, WA.
