Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a prominent family who rose to become Latin America's and Brazil's first cardinal, Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti was born in Cimbres, present day Pesqueira and entered seminary at the age of thirteen. Pursuing studies in Rome and Paris, at the Collegio Romano, the Pontifical Collegio Pio-Latino-Americano, the Pontifical Gregorian University, Saint-Sulpice Seminary and the University of La Sorbonne, he was ordained priest in April 1874. Back in his native country, he served briefly rector of the seminary of Olinda, until being appointed parish priest of Boa Vista and of São Frei Pedro Gonçalves in Recife and successively of his birthplace Cimbres in 1879. Declining an offer for the episcopate in 1888 as coadjutor of São Salvador da Bahia, two years later he willingly accepted the nomination of bishop of Goiás, receiving his episcopal consecration on June 26, 1890. Resigning his office a year later, in 1892 he was transferred to the titular see of Argos and appointed coadjutor with right of succession of the metropolitan see of São Paulo. Succeeding to the latter uponm the death of Dom Lino Deodato Rodrigues de Carvalho in 1894, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on August 31, 1897. Pope Pius X created him cardinal priest with the title of Ss. Bonifacio ed Alessio in the consistory of December 11, 1905, becoming thus the first Brazilian and Latin American to be elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals. Cavalcanti passed away in Rio de Janeiro of bronchial pneumonia and was laid to rest in the metropolitan cathedral following the celebration of a great funeral which aroused huge commotion across Rio.
