His obituary in the Carroll Free Press, Carrollton, Ohio, Wednesday, April 8, 1891.

At his home in this place, Mr. George Gantz, on Thursday the 2nd inst., met the message of death, under sad and sorrowful circumstances. From Saturday night, immediately after he took a dose of medicine, up to the hour of death, his almost constant lamentations were, "Oh! I am poisoned; that dose poisoned me." His stomach constantly cast up all it received. He had suffered some from a kidney trouble, yet up to that night he was walking about his home, in and out doors. He was the oldest of the name in the county, and was born April 22, 1827, in sight of Carrollton on the present Stonebrook farm. He was the fourth member of a family of nine, six brothers and three sisters, all of whom reached the years of maturity. Two brothers and a sister preceded him to the silent tomb. About forty-nine years ago he was united in marriage with Miss Harriett Jackson, of which union there were five sons and a daughter, each of whom reached man or womanhood, though two sons had passed the bourne of life before him, leaving his widow and four children to lament the loss of a most remarkably kind and loving parent and husband. Example and persuasion for his family, was his motto, instead of coercive measures. A farmer by occupation, he did not travel much; yet was a great reader and was well informed upon all subjects pertaining to the affairs of the Government. Had a discerning and discriminating mind, and acted with a conscientious purpose in all cases. Soon after his marriage he and Mrs. Gantz became members of the Disciple Church, we believe under the ministrations of Elder Riegel. His lifeless remains were laid away on Saturday last, along side that of his deceased son William, to await the resurrection. James H. Hawk, officiating minister. (NOTE--his birth date may be wrong in the obituary, but I typed it as it was in the paper. I think it shoud be 1817, because his death age on his headstone stated he was 73 years, 11 months and 10 days old at time of death.)
