Born at St. Helen's England May 5, 1811
Died at Hastings-on-Hudson N.Y. Jan. 4, 1882.
Professor in the New York University both in the academic and medical departments of chemistry, physiology, geology, botany, and mineralogy. He took the first daguerreotype of the human face in 1840, was author of The Intellectual Development of Europe, Conflict Between Religion and Science, History of the Civil War in America, scientific memoirs containing his researches on radiant energy for which he received the Rumford Medal 1875.
ANTONIA C. De P. P. GARDNER his wife
Born in Brazil March 31, 1814
Died at Hastings-on-Hudson N.Y. July 31, 1870
Was devoted wife and mother of his six children.
DOROTHY CATHERINE DRAPER his sister
Born at Newcastle on Tyne England August 6, 1807
Died at Hastings-on-Hudson N.Y. Dec. 10, 1901, was his lifelong assistant, was the first person to have her daguerreotype likeness taken in 1840 by her brother.
Their three bodies are in this grave.
