Professor of ecclesiastical history at the University of La Sorbonne between 1866 and 1874, Perraud's name soon became known across various dioceses for his preaching eloquence. Appointed bishop of the diocese of Autun, he received his episcopal consecration on June 29, 1874. Well known for his interest in the laboring class, whom he defended in many of his orations, on June 8, 1882, he was elected member of the Académie Française.
