At age 16, Scott found a bodybuilding magazine at a city dump, took it home and started exercising in his back yard using a tractor axle as his first barbell for doing curls and presses. Four years later, he won the Mr. Idaho contest and moved to California where he continued lifting and entering contests. In 1960, he won the Mr. California title and won Mr. Pacific Coast the following year. In 1963, he won first place in the medium division at Mr. Universe and the following year, took first-place overall. In 1965, Joe Weider staged the first Mr. Olympia contest in New York City. Scott entered and won the inaugural event and repeated as champion the following year, then stunned the bodybuilding world by retired not long thereafter. In 1978, Arnold Schwarzenegger invited Scott to pose at that year's Mr. Olympia contest where he received a six-minute standing ovation. Scott ran a mail-order bodybuilding program and later owned his own store selling supplements to bodybuilders before going on to own multiple gyms and spas in Utah. Scott, who was inducted into the International Federation of Body Building & Fitness Hall of Fame in 1999, died from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
