U.S. Congressman. Born in York, Pennsylvania, on January 20, 1783, he studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and commenced to work as a doctor at a medical center in York. He was editor-publisher of the York Gazette, (1818-35) and clerk of the courts of York County, (1818-26). In 1827, he was elected to the Twentieth Congress, reelected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses, serving until 1833. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of medicine until his death by suicide at age 52 in York, Pennsylvania.
