Herta Elsa Shafer passed away March 6 in Grass Valley. She was 85. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, March 18, at 11 a.m. at Hooper & Weaver Mortuary, 459 Hollow Way, Nevada City. Private burial will take place at Colfax District Cemetery.
Herta was born May 20, 1928. She graduated from Placer High School in 1946. She began working at the Colfax Fruit Growers and the Colfax Theater. Her career included working for Dr. Dwight Lang, DeWitt State Hospital, and Atascadero State Hospital. At the age of 51 she became the first woman firefighter in the State Hospital System.
She was preceded in death by her mother lsa Dixon, her brother Richard Sheppard and her husband Leroy "Bud" Shafer.

There is a headstone for Herta Shafer that's has been in there for a few years. Just need a picture of her death date engraved on it. It is in the center part in the back, in a family plot with Elsie Dixon, Richard Sheppard. P. Mazankowski
