Harriet was born in Hutchinson KS. Her Parents were W.T. Austin English and Hester Rugg. Around 1914-15 she moved to Los Angeles, where her Grandfather and several of her Aunts had moved to already between 1903-1910. She entered a private Nursing school, the Pacific Nursing school in Los Angeles. She becomes a nurse and enrolls in the Red Cross and serves in France during WW1. There she nurses a young soldier who was injured by gas and shrapnel during the course of action. This young private was Everett K. Higgins. In 1917 he had enlisted in the Army from Phoenix AZ and was off to France. She stayed nursing till the end of the war but EK was sent home to recover. Spent his time recruiting for War Bonds with the army in the Southwest. Between Phoenix and El Paso. EK's parents tired of the heat in Phoenix and moved to Los Angeles about 1920. William & Fanny (Nichols) Higgins. Walking on the streets of Los Angeles in 1921 EK spots the nurse who helped him recover and they meet randomly at an intersection. 3 months later they are married.
