Father, Thomas Thomson

David Thomson was born in Scotland. He was a preacher and came from Scotland in 1735 and settled in Samson County, NC where he was a Justice of the Peace before the Revolutionary War. He was the younger brother of Andrew Thomson (1707-1780)
who came to NC in 1723.

David and Andrew Thomson were prosperous and influential men in the North Carolina community as evidenced by their many land transactions, witnessing of deeds and other documents and service . The book, "Colonists of Carolina in the Lineage of Hon. H. D. Humphrey", by Blanche Humphrey Albee, Richmond, Va., W. Byrd Press, 1938, contains two references which document the civic activities of David. In June 1762, DAVID THOMSON was an Executor of the the will of Thomas Kenan together with Thomas' wife, Elizabeth Johnston Kenan. DAVID THOMSON and ANDREW THOMSON were also members of the Colonial Court in company with Thomas Kenan, Doctor William Houston, Colonel John Sampson, Thomas Hicks and other leading citizens of that time. .

In the Name of God amen. .

I, David Thomson of North Carolina County of Duplin being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be Given to God for the same and Calling to mind the mortality of the body and knowing that it is Appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain my Last Will and Testament. That is to say, Principally and first of all I give and recommend my Soul into the hands of God that gave it, and my Body I recommend it to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the Discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive again at the Mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate it hath pleased God to bless me in life I give, devise and dispose of same in manner and form following..

Item I give unto my well beloved son William Thomson two neagroes Named Jo and Theana and one hundred acres of Land lying in the fork between Buckhall and the spring branch to him and his heirs forever..

Item I give to my son David Thomson two neagroes Named Boson and Jack also on hundred forty four acres of land lying on Cow Marsh and my set of blacksmith tools also my gray mare to him and his heirs forever. .

Item I give unto my well beloved son in law Roger Snell one neagroe wench Named Dinah..

Item I give unto my well beloved son in law Jesse Darden one neagroe wench Named Phillis..

Item I give unto my well beloved son James Thomson two negroes named Bristor and Peter and my Plantation on buckhall and all my Lands Joining there unto containing one hundred and ninety acres also my white horse and one feather Bed and furniture also one writing Desk to him and his heirs forever..

Item I give unto my well beloved son Stephen Thomson my plantation where I now dwell and all my lands joining there unto containing four hundred and one acres and three neagroes names Andrew Tom and Cloe also my part of the still and my feather bed which I now lie on with the furniture belonging thereto also four cows and calves and sixteen head of other cattle and my Large Book called Burkett on the new testament to him and his heirs forever..

Item I give unto my Daughter Amelia Thomson three neagro girls named Peg Cate and Moll also one feather bed and furniture she taking her choice of the beds four also four cows and calves and six head of other cattle likewise my bay mare to her and her heirs forever..

Item I give unto Daughter Martha Thomson three neagroes named Hannah doll and London one feather bed and furniture and four cows and calves and six head of other cattle to her and her heirs forever..

Item I give the remainder part of my cattle to be Equally divided between my three sons Wm Thomson David Thomson and James Thomson..

Item I give my share(?) that in with Thomas Ivey and Edward Byrd to be Equally Divided between my two son in laws Roger Snell and Jesse Darden..

Item I give to my son William Thomson and all my carpenders and joinnerie tools to him and his heirs forever. .

Item It is my will and desire that my black horse and my bay horse and two flukes and one plough and my iron bound cart with all the gears and my crosscut and whip saws and all my stands and Barrels be for the use of the plantation where I now live.

It is my will and desire that all my neagros be continued on the plantation until the next crop be finished also it is my will that all my Goods and Chattles that is not herein mentioned be Equally Divided amongst all my Children..

Item I give unto my son William Thomson one feather bed and furniture..

Item I give unto my son David Thomson one feather bed and furniture..

Item I give unto my Daughter Martha Thomson one small horse Colt..

Lastly I Nominate Constitute and appoint my Brother Andrew Thomson and my son in law Roger Snell Executors of my last will and testament hereby revoking annulling and making void all former and other wills and testaments what so ever in witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this 6th day of March 1773..

The within last Will and Testament of David Thomson was proved before me this 26th day of October 1773 by the oath of Henry Hollingsworth one of the subscribing witnesses thereto who swore that he was present and did see the Testator sign seal publish and declare the same to be and contain his last Will and Testament and at the time thereof he was of sound and disposing mind and memory and Andrew Thomson and Roger Snell the executors in the said will named having qualified thereto agreeable to Law It is Ordered that letters Testamentary issue there on accordingly..

Book 3, page 258, Deed: Henry McCulloch (by Henry E McCulloch) to DAVID THOMSON; dated: 8 April 1762 . Trans.:50 pounds for 299 acres "Beginning ... on the head of Buck Hall swamp." Deed also mentions the Spring Branch. Witness: John Dickson and Thomas Routledge. John Dickson was Clerk of Court. Deed was proven or acknowledged in court in May 1762..

Book 3, page 273, Deed: Henry McCulloch (by Henry Eustace McCulloch) to DAVID THOMSON; dated: 25 March 1762(?). Trans.: 40 pounds for 142 acres. Deed mentions White Cow Marsh. Wit.: ANDREW THOMSON and Thomas Kenan. John Dickson was Clerk of Court. Deed was proven or acknowledged in court in May 1762. Note: Henry McCulloh was of Turnham Green, Middlesex County, England. He received a grant of 71,160 acres "lying and situate upon the Branches of the North East Branch of Cape Fear River and also upon the Black River and the branches thereof" from King George II dated 3 March 1745 "in as full and ample manner of the manor of East Greenwick." The deed also mentions "the plan or map thereof Hereunto annexed." Henry McCulloh reserved certain of the mineral rights (for example, one-half of any gold and silver ore) and the grantee was usually given six months to have the deed registered..

Land was part of of the tract of 71, 160 acres granted Henry McCulloh by patent dated 3 March 1745. Know ye that I Thos Ryan of the County of Bertie, Planter for & in consideration of the Sum of four Hundred Pounds Current money aforesd to me in hand paid by DAVID THOMSON of the County & Province aforesaid Carpenter Witnesseth that before the Ensealing and Delivery hereof Hath Given granted bargained sold allienated (?) Conveyed and Confirmed and by these Presents Doth freely and Absolutely give grant bargain alienate and Confirm unto the said DAVID THOMSON his heirs and assigns forever one Certain Parcell or Tract of Land & Plantation Containing one Hundred acres be the same more or less butted & Bounded As follows & beginning at Thos Ashbur's Corner tree a poplar thence along his Line N 20 East 260 ??? to John Hollbrook's Line thence along his line to James Ceaton's Line then to George Paterson's Line thence to Edward Byrd's Line and along his Line to Cashoke Creek Swamp thence along the Swamp to Henry Vanluvens Line to the first station. Know ye that I Thos Ryan of the County of Bertie, Planter for & in consideration of the Sum of four Hundred Pounds Current money aforesd to me in hand paid by DAVID THOMSON of the County & Province aforesaid Carpenter Witnesseth that before the Ensealing and Delivery hereof Hath Given granted bargained sold allienated (?) Conveyed and Confirmed and by these Presents Doth freely and Absolutely give grant bargain alienate and Confirm unto the said DAVID THOMSON his heirs and assigns forever one Certain Parcell or Tract of Land & Plantation Containing one Hundred acres be the same more or less butted & Bounded As follows & beginning at Thos Ashbur's Corner tree a poplar thence along his Line N 20 East 260 ??? to John Hollbrook's Line thence along his line to James Ceaton's Line then to George Paterson's Line thence to Edward Byrd's Line and along his Line to Cashoke Creek Swamp thence along the Swamp to Henry Vanluvens Line to the first station. To Have & to Hold the Said Land with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging unto him the said DAVID THOMSON his heirs & assigns forever and he the said Thos Ryan Doth covenant grant and agree to & with the said David Thomson his heirs Execs adms & assigns & he the said Thos Ryan for himself his heirs Execs adms that before the Ensealing & Delivery of these Presents he is the true Lawfull & Sole owner in Fee Simple of the above bargained Premises and hath in himself good Right full Power and Lawfull Authority to give grant bargain sell convey & Confirm the same (?) & that the said DAVID THOMSON his heirs & assigns Shall forever have hold use Occupy and Possess & Enjoy the Premises above said & that this is free and Clear & freely & Clearly Acquitted Exonerated and Discharged from all manner of former gifts grants sales????? Mortgages Wills Intails Joyn??? Doweries Judgments or any Incumbrance his majestys Quit Rents only Excepting Whatsoever and the said Thos Ryan shall & will from time to time & at all other times forever hereafter ??? Bargain and Execute Such further Act & Acts deed & Conveyances for the settlement (?) and Confirming & assuring the same unto the said DAVID THOMSON his heirs & assigns forever Doth Warrant and forever Defend the said Land & Plantation unto him or them. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & fixed my Seal this the twenty ninth day of November 1742. .

A native of Stirling, Scotland. Settled on this plantation in 1753. Justice of the Peace in 1759. Children were William, James, Stephen, David, Sarah, Amelia and Martha.

Father: Thomas Thomson is named as father of Andrew, on stones in the Thomas - Moore Cemetery, where he is buried & Andrew is named as brother on stones in this cemetery.
