Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Pisa, Raffaello Carlo Rossi entered the Order of Discalced Carmelites in 1887, professing his vows in 1899 and was ordained priest in December 1901. Lecturing at various houses of studies of his Order between 1902 and 1920, he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Volterra at the early age of forty three, receiving his episcopal consecration at the church of Santa Teresa al Corso d'Italia on May 25 that year. Named assessor of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation and secretary of the Sacred College of Cardinals on June 7, 1923, in December that year he was promoted to titular archbishopric see of Tessalonica. Pope Pius XI named him assistant at the Pontifical Throne in March 1930 and created him cardinal priest with the title of Santa Prassede two months later. Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals from 1939 until 1941, in his last days he moved to Crespano del Grappa due to his frail health at the house of the Scalabrinian Fathers, of whom he was elected superior general upon the death of Cardinal Carlo Perosi. To this day, the Scalabrinians consider him as "almost their second father" after bishop Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, as Pope Pius XII said following his death. While in Crespano, Rossi passed away alone in his room, only to be discovered the next morning. Transferred to Rome, he was laid to rest in the same church in which he received his episcopal consecration. A man of deep piety, the cause of his beatification was introduced in 1976.
