OLD CITIZEN PASSES AWAY

Hulett A. Smith Died Friday at His Home in North Beckley.

Hulett A. Smith, aged 83 years, one of the oldest men of the county, and one of Raleigh's pioneers, died Friday, July 21, at his home at Sprague Crossing, in North Beckley, after a lingering illness of a number of years. About two years ago he sustained a paralytic stroke, which kept him confined to his bed. Previous to that time he had been a sufferer from a number of ailments.

The funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon from his late home, being in charge of Rev. F. H. Nutter, of the Southern Methodist church, interment following in Wildwood cemetery, with Rose and Turner, undertakers, in charge.

The deceased is survived by a widow and nine children, as follows: William H., John H., Joe L. and Robert W., of Beckley, and H. E. Smith, of Mansfield, Mo., and W. L. Smith, of Logan, and Mrs. Sarah Walters, of Macdonald, Mrs. W. J. Scott, of Scarbro, and Mrs. Will Hancock, of Beckley.

SMITH, Hulett - A native of Patrick County, he settled in the Marshes about 1857. He married Angeline, a daughter of Nathaniel McMillan. He was a Confederate soldier and father of Joe L. Smith of Beckley.

He may have been the son of James (1790-1870) and Sarah WILLIS (1801-1870) SMITH.
