Mary Ora Whitehead Spears was known as "Minnie" to her family. She was the second of three daughters born to John Mark Whithead (1833-1909) and Martha Estelle Mathers (1841-1878). Minnie was born in Lawrence, Kansas during the Civil War. Her father, John Mark Whitehead, enlisted in the 7th Kansas Cavalry, company I, and fought for the Union. Her older sister was Emma Belle Whitehead White (1859-1931) and her younger sister was Ada Margaret Whitehead Purdum (1865-1953). Minnie grew up on family farms in Shawnee County, Kansas near Topeka.

After the death of Minnie's mother, Martha, in 1878, her father moved to San Marcial, New Mexico to establish and manage a Harvey House at a railroad stop. Later, Minnie and her younger sister, Ada, joined her father in San Marcial. Her older sister Emma was married to a farmer named Joseph White by then and Emma stayed in Kansas. In San Marcial, New Mexico, Minnie meets and marries a young man named George Houston Spears in 1883. The first of their four children, Emma Estelle Spears (28 Sept 1886 - 7 June 1942) was born in San Marcial. After Emma's birth the family moves to San Diego, California.

Minnie and George's other 3 children are born in San Diego. They are: Ruth A. Spears Bone (22 July 1891 - 11 Jan 1977), George Houston Spears Jr. (31 March 1893 - 25 January 1948) and Philip Lacy Spears (31 Dec 1896 - 8 Sept 1982).

After George's death in 1904, Minnie and her children continued to live in San Diego. Her daughter Emma Estelle never married and lived with her mother until Emma died in 1942. Her son Philip Lacy Spears lived with Minnie until her death in 1943.
