BRIDGES, HELEN BALFOUR DRAKE BOUTWELL Helen Balfour Drake Boutwell Bridges, died on November 28, 2007. She was 94 years of age. Helen was born in Birmingham, AL, on December 28, 1912 to Dr. Charles Hunter Drake and Carrie Linder Helden. She attended Phillips High School, Howard College (Samford University) and received a teaching certificate in piano from Birmingham Southern College. Mrs. Bridges was a faithful member of Highlands United Methodist Church for more than 80 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Marvin Williams Sunday School Class. It was at the Highlands League youth group that she met her husband, Albert Burton Boutwell. Helen was a constant encourager for Mr. Boutwell, a young attorney with political aspirations, whom she married in 1934. She was instrumental in his being elected to the State Legislature as a Representative and a Senator. She supported him when he served as Lt. Governor of Alabama and Mayor of Birmingham. Helen's family was her first priority; however, she enjoyed piano performance and shared her talent as a gifted seamstress. Active in community affairs, she was a member of Forest Park Garden Club, National Society of Arts and Letters and Birmingham Music Club. After the death in 1973 of Mayor Boutwell, Helen married Roy Patton Bridges in 1979. He preceded her in death in 1989. Others preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters---Elizabeth Drake and Carolyn Drake White of Birmingham and Christine Drake Berry of Atlanta. Following Mr. Bridges death, she resided in Mountain Brook with her daughter, Helen Linder (Ducky) Boutwell Hannon; two sons also survive Mrs. Bridges. They are Albert Burton Boutwell, Jr. (Lynn) of Panama City, Florida, and Charles Drake Boutwell (Candi) of Northbrook, Illinois. Other relatives include five grandchildren: Ashley Boutwell, Austin, TX; Douglas and David Boutwell, Northbrook, IL; Sean Bowen Hannon (Lori), Mountain Brook; and Christine Hannon Bargman (Christopher), Birmingham. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren and a special great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Marie Hannon-Bargman of Mountain Brook. The family expresses special thanks to New Beacon Hospice, Mary Ellen Johnson, Jackie Cook and Barbara Hill who lovingly cared for Mrs. Bridges and to the many friends who have shown kindnesses to the family. A Graveside Service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on Monday, December 3, 2007, at eleven o'clock a.m., Reverend Emily Freeman Penfield of Highlands United Methodist Church officiating. Ridout's Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Sean Hannon, Clinton Harris, III, Dixon Goodhew, David Boutwell, Todd Jackson, and John Benner. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Highlands United Methodist Church, 1045 20th Street, So., Birmingham, 35205; the Birmingham Museum of Art, 2000 8th Avenue N., Birmingham, 35203 or a favorite charity.
