Composer, Actor. When not composing, he wrote comedies & dramas & starred in movies. He was considered one of the most handsome leads in silent movies. His ashes were buried under a lilac bush. The words that appear on the plaque in front of the bush, Till you are home once more, are a paraphrase of the last lines of his politically stirring "Keep the Home Fires Burning" from 1914 (the first hit for the classically trained Novello) and "We'll Gather Lilacs In The Spring" from his 1945 hit musical Perchance to Dream. We'll gather lilacs was sung at his cremation by the show's star Olive Gilbert.
