U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Phillips Academy, in 1842, then joined his father's woolen goods manufacturing business and became partner in 1850, under the name Nathaniel Stevens & Son in North Andover, Massachusetts. He also served as president of the Andover National Bank, was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, in 1861 and served in the Massachusetts State Senate, in 1868. In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until 1895. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his interests in the manufacturing business until his death.
