Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Passage Saint-Esprit in the commune of Vaucouleurs, Alexis-Henri-Marie Lépicier joined the Order of Servants of Mary at their Fulham Road priory in London in 1878. Ordained priest there in September 1885, he moved to Rome in order to pursue his studies at the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum De Propaganda Fide, earning doctorates in philosophy and theology. Successively lecturing dogmatic theology at the named Propaganda Fide Athenaeum between 1892 and 1913, he served as rector of the Servite International College of Saint-Alexis Falconiéri from 1895 until 1913. Named one of the four general consultors of his order in 1895, he was appointed general procurator in 1901. Sent on mission to England for the establishment of the metropolitan provinces of Westminster, Liverpool and Birmingham in May 1911, between 1912 and 1913 he acted as apostolic visitor and delegate to Scotland. Elected the 94th prior general of his order on May 13, 1913, in Florence, he occupied the post until May 27, 1920. Appointed archbishop of the titular see of Tarso, Lépicier received his episcopal consecration in Rome on May 29, 1924. Named prefect of the Sacred Congregation for Religious on December 17, 1928, he acted as apostolic visitor to the Eastern Indies dioceses dependent on the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in June 1924, and again in Abyssinia and Eritrea in April 1927. Pope Pius XI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of December 19, 1927, with the title of Santa Susanna. A prolific writer, whose subjects differ from Sacred Scriptures to theology, philosophy, apologetics and ascetics, Lépicier's name became well known across Europe due o his presence as papal legate in various important events including the celebrations in honor of Sainte-Joan d'Arc in Orléans in April 1929; the National Eucharistic Congress in Carthage in April 1930; and the Plenary Council of Malta in May 1935, through which was decreed that the Catholic Action should be established in every parish. While visiting Cospicua on the island of Malta, the Cardinal, who back in his early days had worked as a barman, offered those accompanying him a cocktail and was thus taken to St. George's Band Club. Politician Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici, known as "Il-Gross" kept an eye open for the Cardinal's recipe and for years which followed he would offer a "Lépicier" cocktail on special occasions. Resigning the prefecture of the Sacred Congregation for Religious due to ill health on December 31, 1935, the Cardinal died of pernicious anemia complicated by bronchial trouble in his Roman residence at via Mercadante 34.
