Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Ancona, Gaetano Baluffi came from a noble family. Receiving his education at the seminary of his birthplace and later at the University of Fano, from where he earned doctorates in utroque iure in both canon and civil laws., he was prdained priest in March 1811. Established soon a name as a capable writer, he lectured rhetoric and served as pro-vicar general of the diocese of Ancona from 1824 until 1833, when he was appointed bishop of the titular see of Bagnoregio, receiving his episcopal consecration in Rome on August 18, 1833. Named assistant at the Pontifical Throne in December of the following year, Baluffi was appointed internuncio in Nueva Granada, present day Colombia, and apostolic delegate in Nueva Granada and all South America with exception Brazil. Transferred to the archiepiscopal see of Camerino, with perpetual administration of Treia, on January 27, 1842, he transferred to the titular see of Perge in April 1845 and named secretary of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars. Canon of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, he was transferred to the see of Imola with the personal title of archbishop on September 21, 1846. Created cardinal priest with the title of Ss. Marcellino e Pietro by Pope Pius IX in the consistory of December 21, 1846, he passed away in Imola and was buried in the local cemetery, remaining to this day the highest ranking prelate found interred in the vast Piratello cemetery.
