John’s father was reared as a farmer but was a born politician and was the Democratic leader of Harringtonn Twp for many years.
John and his brother Isaac Kipp joined the Union Army in Virginia while their brother James Kipp was home helping tend the family farm. James Kipp had been a clerk at his brother David’s grocery store at Sparkill, NY. He had left home at age 15 but called home in 1862. James Kipp’s life is of further interest.
