Services scheduled Monday for Dallas attorney Atwell
Funeral services for Webster Atwell, 77, a prominent Dallas attorney, will be
held at 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Park Methodist Church. Private entombment
services will be held in Hillcrest Mausoleum.
Atwell died Friday night at his home, 3630 Overbrook Road.
A Dallas native, Atwell was graduated from Williams College in Williamstown,
Mass., in 1921 and received a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1924. He
was assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas from July 1924 to
May 1925, when he began a private practice in Dallas.
He endowed the William Hawley Atwell Chair of Constitutional Law at Southern
Methodist University's School of Law in honor of his father, a former federal
judge.
A longtime supporter of education, Atwell was former chairman of the Alumni Fund
of Williams College and a member of the school's Society of Alumni. He also
served on the Alumni Scholarship Committee of Harvard Law School.
Atwell also was a former director of the Great National Life Insurance Co. and
Southland Corp.
His professional memberships included the American Judicature Society, the
National Legal Aid and Defender Association, the World Peace Through Law Center
and the Legal Section of the American Life Convention.
Atwell was president of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel in 1958-59 and
served in the House of Delegates to the American Bar Association in 1964-65.
He was a member of the International, American, Texas and Dallas Bar
Associations. He also was a charter fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.
Survivors include his wife, Laura; two sons, William Webster Atwell and Anthony
Atwell; and six grandchildren.
