Second Lieutenant Hayden served with the 39th Combat Crew Training Squadron from Davis-Monthan Army Airfield, Arizona.

He was the pilot, and one of four airmen killed in the crash landing of RB-24E Liberator #42-7350, due to engine failures, at Dos Cabezos, 20 miles southeast of Willcox, Arizona.
Four airmen were killed and five survived with injuries.

The three other Army men killed were:
