On March 26, 2014, Elizabeth Ann Heflin, 88, passed away at her home in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She was the daughter of Jesse Malcolm Carmichael and Elizabeth Weille Carmichael; the sister of Jere Malcolm Carmichael; the wife of Howell Thomas Heflin; and, the mother of Howell Thomas Heflin, Jr. and Mary Carmichael Heflin. In addition to her son, Tom, she is survived by her daughter-in-law: Cornelia Hood Heflin, grandchildren: Wilson Carmichael Heflin and Mary Catherine Heflin, Wil's fiancée: Elisa Faison, and, her sister-in-law: Emma Carmichael.
Elizabeth Ann was a graduate of Deshler High School, Tuscumbia, Alabama. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Alabama, where she was president of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.
She was a science teacher in Huntsville. Alabama. She returned to Tuscumbia and taught at Deshler High School. After her marriage, she retired from teaching to raise her family.
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, where she was the first female elected to the Church's Vestry. During her life she was active in numerous church, civic and charitable activities and organizations.
Throughout her life, she maintained a keen awareness and interest in the political and governmental affairs of the State of Alabama and the United States, knowing that service would enhance the lives of the people of this state and nation.
To celebrate Elizabeth Ann's life and legacy, family and friends will gather at Morrison's Funeral Home, 825 N Main Street, Tuscumbia, Alabama from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 29, 2014 for visitation and at Grace Episcopal Church, 103 Darby Avenue, Sheffield, Alabama at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 30, 2014 for the funeral. Interment will follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery, Tuscumbia, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you remember those in need and contribute to your favorite charities or church, or that you make a donation to the Outreach Ministry of Grace Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 838, Sheffield, AL 35660.
Mike, as she was affectionately known to many, will be deeply missed. She loved God. She loved her neighbors. She would want everyone to use this time to reflect on the well being and needs others. May we all embrace her legacy of public service and charity
