Patrick Edmund Hanlon was born in Ballindeasig, County Cork, Ireland, 19 July 1878, the son of Edmond Hanlon and Mary Fennell.

He married Margaret Mary Keane in St. Patrick's Church, Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts on 27 November 1907.

They had the following children in Roxbury, Mass.:
Edmund Patrick Hanlon, b. 20 Oct. 1908, m. Georgia M. Swaney.
Daniel J. Hanlon, b. 23 July 1910.
Patrick Joseph Hanlon, b. 14 Dec. 1911, m. Mary Gertrude Agnes Mahon.
James Ambrose Hanlon, b. 25 Nov. 1913.
John Patrick Hanlon, b. 16 Sept. 1914, d. 18 April 1936.
Mary Hanlon, b. 28 Sept. 1916, d. 12 Oct. 1918 during the Spanish influenza epidemic.

On 2 January 1917, he died at the age of 38 of pneumonia, leaving his wife Margaret a widowed mother of six young children.
