Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Fossano, Giuseppe Beltrami entered the local seminary, pursuing later his studies in Rome at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum S. Apollinare and the Royal University. Ordained priest in March 1916, he soon went on to serve as a military chaplain in the Italian army. Joining the staff of the Vatican Library in 1923 and later that of the Secretariat of State in 1926, he acted as lawyer for the causes of canonization and beatification in the Sacred Congregation of Rites between 1926 and 1940. Appointed apostolic nuncio in Guatemala and El Salvador, Beltrami received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Damascus in Rome on April 7, 1940. Named nuncio in Colombia on November 15, 1945, he acted as nuncio at the disposition of Secretariat of State between 1948 and 1950, serving later as nuncio in Lebanon and internuncio in Holland from January 31, 1959 until June 26, 1967. Three days later, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of June 26, 1967, with the title of Santa Maria Liberatrice a Monte Testaccio. Spending his last years in Rome, upon his death following a sudden embolism, in accordance with his wishes, his body was transferred to his native Fossano and interred in the local cathedral.
