United States Army Brigadier General. Born in Sackett's Harbor, New York, he attended the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, where in 1852, he graduated first in his class, brevetted as Lieutenant of engineers. During the Civil War he was in charge of all of the coastal fortifications in the state of Maine, overseeing the construction of Fort Knox on the Penobscot River. After the war he was placed in charge of all engineer troops and fortifications. In 1877 he assumed the position of engineer in charge of public buildings and grounds in Washington D.C. Under his leadership the Washington aqueduct, as well as the building for the State, War and Navy departments were built. He was the engineer for the Washington Monument from 1878 until its completion in 1884. His also headed the construction of the Library of Congress building, completed just after his death. On July 6, 1888 he was appointed Brigadier General and Chief of Engineers of the United States Army and served in that position until 1895. His father was General Silas Casey of Mexican and Civil War fame.
