Iona (Brink) Schaffer was born March 12, 1931, to her parents Harm and Henrietta (Hoekman) Brink. As a young girl Iona moved with her family to Bellflower, California. She graduated from Excelsior Union High School.
In 1952 Iona was married to Ken Schaffer. To this union God brought the blessing of three children; Debbie, Rodney, and Kenneth. The family lived in Anchorage, Alaska from 1956 to 1966.
Following a divorce Iona moved back to California. With a strong, tenacious and independent spirit she was able to make a new life for herself, never forgetting her love for the children. She was employed for several years as a bookkeeper at the Maywood-Bell Ford dealership. For the last nine years Iona was a resident of the Artesia Christian Home.
For the last 30 years Iona endured serious illness. In 1974 she had a large brain tumor. It was only her faith and indomitable spirit that kept her going forward in spite of handicap and progressive illness. During these years her focus was always toward others, especially her children, grandchildren, and her mother whose care she provided for several years.
Remembering her with great love and affection are her daughter Debbie and husband Dennis and children Kimberly and Melissa (Missy); son Rodney and wife Gayle and children Leandra, Kendra, and Alexandra; son Kenneth and wife Janice and children Sara and Hanna as well as many other relatives and friends.
Iona had a strong faith, seeing God's will in adversity, always trusting in God's love. She had a good sense of humor throughout her illness, knowing she was always in God's hands.
