Martha Joan Doub Billings, age 82, departed from this world peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Born to Herman and Maggie Doub of Pfafftown, North Carolina on 4 December 1931, Joan graduated from Old Richmond High School and later from Appalachian State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She married her high school sweetheart, C. G. Billings of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and they were happily married for 63 years. During her lifetime Joan became an accomplished teacher, musician, and gardener. Even until her 82nd year, her former students from Fleetwood Elementary School regularly dropped by her summer home in Fleetwood to wish her well. She often played music at Boone Methodist Church, and spent many hours playing and sharing hymns on her piano. She was an ardent gardener and raised azaleas and tended to her seasonal vegetable garden. She was accomplished in many crafts and enjoyed many, including woodworking, quilt making, crocheting and sewing. Joan was a frequent contributor to the "Cricket's Nest" senior craft center in Winston-Salem, NC. Most of all, she will be remembered by her family as a patient, caring, and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Billings is survived by her devoted husband, Mr. C. G. Billings; two children, Dr. Jeffery David Billings (Tootsie) and Anne Billings Levkoff (Stephen); and four grandchildren, Allie Elizabeth Billings, David Lake Billings, Michael David Levkoff and Christopher Billings Levkoff, and one sister Rebecca Doub Dockery. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman T. Doub and Maggie P. Doub, a brother, James Doub, a daughter, Susan Carol Billings and a grandson, Jonathan S. Levkoff, Jr. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 5, at 2:00 p.m. at Salem Funeral Home on Reynolda Road. The family will receive and visit with friends at a reception following the service. There will be a private interment at Forsyth Memorial Park.
