John was born September 18, 1918 in New York, New York, son of the late John Patrick McDonagh and Nora Barry McDonagh. He was a veteran of the US Air Force, retiring with the rank of SMSGT. He was a Life Member of VFW Post #3142, American Legion Post 147 where he was a Past Post Commander, Past District Commander for the American Legion, Chef De Gare of Vaitune 974. He was also Grand Chef De Gare of South Carolina 40/8. John was a faithful member of Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, where he served as an usher, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he worked at Charleston Naval Shipyard in Design. John was active in the community and volunteered with the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. He was a member of the Charleston Air Force Golf Course.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lucille Lilly Guidry McDonagh; two daughters, Sheila Datillo and her husband, Tom of Charleston, SC and Maureen Cobb and her husband, Larry of Hanahan, SC; his grandchildren, Lynn Florie and her husband, Bryce of Hanahan, SC and Will Cobb of Royal Palm Beach, FL; and his great-granddaughter, Avery Florie. John was preceded in death by his son, Kevin McDonagh.
