Per his death certificate found on Ancestry.com: he was a son of John Hampden Brooks, born in Edgefield, S. C., and Jane Adams, born in Congaree, S. C., and the husband of Elizabeth R. Brooks. He was in life insurance. He died at 1509 Pickens St. of a cerebral hemorrhage. The informant was Joseph M. Bell of Columbia, S. C.

Found in The State 10 May 1935: M. Berrien Brooks, 56, well known and popular Columbia insurance man, died at his home yesterday morning after a brief illness. Mr. Brooks, first golf champion of the two Carolinas and Spanish-American war veteran, was born at Roseland, Edgefield county. He was the son of Capt. John Hampden Brooks and Jane Adams Brooks of Edgefield county. He served with distinction during the Spanish-American war and held the rank of sergeant. While he had played little golf in recent years, Mr. Brooks was at one time an outstanding golfer of Ridgewood club and, on the occasion of the first championship tournament of the Carolinas Golf association in Greenville in 1910, he won the tournament. Mr. Brooks had lived in Columbia for the past 38 years, and for over 20 years had been special agent for the Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance company. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal church and was active in the civic affairs of Columbia. He was widely connected throughout the state. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Elizabeth Randolph Bell; two daughters, Miss Elizabeth R. Brooks and Miss Jane Adams Brooks; one son, John Hampden Brooks, all of Columbia; two sisters, Miss Minnie Brooks of Greenwood and Mrs. J. R. Johnson of Charleston; and two brothers, Loudon Brooks of Greenwood and Barry Brooks of Columbia. Funeral services will be held at the graveside in Elmwood cemetery at 11:15 this morning, conducted by the Rev. Henry D. Phillips, rector of Trinity Episcopal church. Mr. Brooks' death shocked his many friends. He had been ill only a few hours, being stricken about 7 p.m. Wednesday and dying at 11:30 yesterday morning.
