Our beloved Irene, mother and grammy, passed away at ninety years of age on March 16, 2014.

Born in Salt Lake City on July 14, 1923, she was the firstborn of the five children of Stephen Glenn Covey and Irene Louise Richards Covey. She was the first grandchild of both the Covey and Richards sides of the family.

Irene attended Douglas School, Stewart School, and East High, where she met her future husband and soulmate, Calvin P. Gaddis.

She attended Henagar Business School, BYU, and the University of Utah, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Cal and Irene were married on the evening of Christmas Day in 1943, and he left the next morning after a one-day leave from the Army Air Corps.

Irene was very active in her community and dedicated to helping others. She was a longtime member of the Junior League, producing bi-monthly children's shows for KUED and puppet group productions in schools. She served on the LDS Hospital Volunteer Board and was a "Pink Lady" at the University and LDS Hospitals.

As a member of the Assistance League, she was active in "Kids on the Block" buying clothes, shoes, and coats for needy children and "Book Bank" reading to school children and giving them books.

After years of spending summer vacations at the shared family cabin on Hebgen Lake in Montana, Irene and Cal built a cabin of their own in 1968. It was lovingly furnished and decorated by Irene, where she gathered her family and friends for food and fun.

Irene delighted in music and singing, played the piano and strummed along on her ukulele at family sing-alongs. She loved her grandchildren and they loved her! Hebgen remains the Gaddis family legacy of "Heaven on Earth."

In 1973, Cal's work took them to London, where they lived for several years, traveling extensively in Europe and beyond. Irene took classes at Le Cordon Bleu School of Cooking in London and became an even better cook than before.

She loved to entertain and created many fantastic parties, dinners, and events in her home. Irene will be remembered for her radiant smile, great sense of humor, and always, grace and style. No one ever entered her home without feeling like an honored guest and part of the family.

She loved the arts, theatre, ballet, and the symphony. She and Cal continued taking interesting classes at the U. Irene actively participated in many social clubs and gatherings: Culture Club, Friendship Circle, Town Club, Dance Club, Cooking Club, Classics Club, Study Group, and Ladies Literary Club.

An accomplished bridge player, Irene was a member of several bridge clubs. She loved tennis, playing with friends at least three times a week and was a spirited doubles partner with Cal.

They both were avid readers and in later life, she enjoyed reading aloud to him. Her beloved husband Cal died in December 2013, and three months later Irene followed him. They were married for seventy years. As he later wrote, "If ever there was wedded bliss, it existed here in great abundance."

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, Marilyn C. Williams; and brother, Stephen R. Covey. She is survived by her sister, Helen Jean C. Williams; brother, John M.R. (Jane) Covey; children, Carol Hoffmann of West Yellowstone, Montana; Ann Gaddis of Tempe, Arizona; Chris Gaddis (Wendy) of Hyde Park, Utah; Jand ennifer Camp of Salt Lake City; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank all of her caregivers at the wonderful Sunrise Senior Living Center and her loving friends and family for their support.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive (1495 East). Viewing at 1:00 p.m. and services at 2:00 p.m.
