Joseph C. Klaus of Germany and Mary Margareth Braun Klaus, of. Chicago, Illinois, owned the Nippersink Dairy near Richmond, Illinois. They had four sons: Joseph, Roy, Norbert, and Gerald. Their oldest son, Joseph Jr., was engaged to be married to a local school teacher when he developed appendicitis. He was hospitalized too late to prevent a rupture and he died. According to his brother Gerald, he leaped to his death from his hospital window, unable to stand the pain.

Joseph C.'s great- nephews, William and Robert, sons of his son Norbert, were both professional baseball players. According to Gerald, Joseph was the best ballplayer of them all. It's easy to imagine he'd have been proud of Billy's and Bobby's successes.
