Anton Friedrich Heinen had the unique distinction of being a Zeppelin airship pilot, in both Germany and the United States. Originally a member of the German Merchant Marine, he began working in 1910 for the DELAG (Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft ), the world’s first commercial airline, using the dirigibles of the Zeppelin company. During WWI he trained German Army and Navy pilots in the art of airship flying. In 1922 he came to the United States under contract as an advise
r and flight instructor to the US Navy’s “Lighter-Than-Air” program. He was credited with helping to save the USS Shenandoah when it broke free of the Lakehurst (NJ) mooring mast during a violent storm in January of 1924. He remained in the United States, serving as an adviser during the Navy’s LTA program.
