March 11, 1929 - April 6, 2014
Norma passed peacefully at home on Sunday evening. She was 85. A heart attack on the evening of our sister's funeral brought her into hospice care at home. Health Care Resources, especially Christine White, and the Mission Hospice team have been the angels in our lives these past few weeks.
Norma was born and raised in Garfield, Utah and graduated from Cypress High School in 1947. The University of Utah was next, where she met and married Roy Mitchell of Bingham Canyon, a returned veteran of World War II. His degree in Electrical Engineering got him hired by IBM in 1950. They moved to San Francisco in 1951 and bought their home in South San Francisco in 1953.
Active in Scouting, PTA, Women's Club and church, Norma made friends everywhere she went.
She became a teacher's aide in the 1960s for the South San Francisco Unified School District. She loved the kids she worked with in Special Education, and she stayed friends with colleagues, even after retirement in 1990. Watercolor class, floral design and reconnecting with old friends made for a full and happy life after Roy passed in December, 1990. Daughters and granddaughters and family and friends filled her days and years.
We hope your memories of Norma are happy ones. Celebrate her life with a good meal or a good book. Ever the teacher, she has now taught us to move on with dignity.
Norma is survived by daughters Judith Mary (Robert) Chaney, Marcie Anne Mitchell, and granddaughters Elizabeth Erin Chaney and Laura Hope Chaney.
The family would be honored by donations to the American Heart Association , Guide Dogs for the Blind or your favorite charity .
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 17, 4 - 9 pm with a Funeral Service on Friday, April 18 at 11 am, all in the Tiffany Chapel of CYPRESS LAWN FUNERAL HOME, 1370 El Camino Real, Colma, CA. Interment Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, Colma, CA.
