According to the handwritten journal of his wife Lorena, Samuel was born in England and his family moved to Balenavon, Monmouthshire in South Wales when he was about 5 years old. He had five brothers and one sister. The brothers were named: Jim, Tom, Jack, Harry and Ted; the sister was Lizzie. The only record we found for Samuel’s parents and siblings was the 1891 census in Blaenavon, Montmouthshire, Wales listing mother Mary Goodwin, widowed, age 50 (born about 1841) and three sons: John (Jack?), age 28, coal miner; Sam, age 18, coal miner; Edward (Ted?), age 15, coal miner.
Samuel came to the US in 1896 according to his wife's journal. His mother died in 1898.
