Sarah lived on her father's farm in West Settlement, Roxbury, New York until after her 20th birthday. When about the age of 18 years, she began to teach, her first experience teaching private pupils in the home of her uncle in Washington, District of Columbia. She later taught in Moresville, New York and Roxbury; and in early winter 1853, she went to Lackawack, New York to teach for a year and a half. It was in Lackawack that she met the widow, George Northrop, a merchant of that village. She married to him on 13 July 1854 at Roxbury and became step-mother to his five children. In the summer of 1855, they moved to Canadensis, Pennsylvania. Sarah and George had ten children together and, seeking better educational opportunities for them, they moved to Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. After her husband's death, she and her young family moved to Hackettstown, New Jersey. When her daughter, Ida, was offered a teaching opportunity in Camden, New Jersey, the family moved again and organized the Raymond Academy. The school was later sold when Ida's health declined and the family moved to Yonkers, New York. Sarah's health soon declined and, in August of 1896, she returned to Roxbury to live at the summer home of her niece, Helen Gould. Sarah was remembered as patient, even-tempered, and genial.
