Mary was raised at Roxbury where her father was a prominent farmer. She was the fourth of six children born to John Burr Gould and Mary More Gould. Her mother died when she was but eight years old. Her father married again in 1842 to Mary Ann Corbin who assumed responsibility as her mother.
