Lilian was the daughter of Gilbert Hovey and Elsie May Bell Grosvenor. Her father was editor of National Geographic magazine from 1899 to 1954 and President of National Geographic Society from 1920 to 1954. Her mother was a published author. Both parents held honorary Doctors of Law degrees. Lilian married Cabot Coville on 28 July 1927 at Baddeck, Nova Scotia at the estate Beian Bhreagh. This estate was the summer home of Lilian's maternal grandfather, Alexander Graham Bell. The couple left immediately for Japan where Cabot was appointed as language officer at the American Embassy in Tokyo. Lilian's and Cabot's union produced two sons, both born in Tokyo. They were Gilbert Grosvenor Coville and Cabot Coville, Jr. Cabot would marry again in 1949 and have three children with his second wife. Lilian married next to Joseph Marion Jones, Jr. on 17 November 1976 at New York City.
