Kentucky Citizen Dies

George W. Banks, retired Farmer of Hunter's Bottom and Confederate Veteran

George W. Banks, Esq, a venerable citizen of Trimble county, Ky., passed away yesterday afternoon at the home of his son, William Banks, in Hunter's Bottom. Death was due to complications arising from old age. Mr. Banks was in his 83rd year.

Mr. Banks was a retired farmer and highly esteemed and a well known resident of Hunter's Bottom, where he had lived for a number of years. He served in the Confederate Army in the civil war as a member of Company E of the famous Fourth Kentucky cavalry, Capt. Samuel Duncan's regiment.

Mr. Banks was a kind father and an excellent neighbor and he will be missed in the community as well as in the family circle. He is survived by four sons and two daughters: William, Samuel, and George Banks of Hunter's Bottom; Jasper Banks, Locust, Ky.; Mrs. Peter Westrick, of Hunter's Bottom; Mrs. Mattie Thompson, of Locust.

On 10 Sep 1862, Pvt. George W. Banks enlisted in Co. E, 4th Kentucky Cavalry Rgt. (Confederate) in Trimble Co., KY. On 30 Nov 1862, George was present at Camp Reedy Creek with his company. When the company was at Camp Richardson, Lee Co., VA on 31 Jan 1863, George was absent and sick. He was back with them 28 Feb 1863 in Hawkins Co., TN. On 13 May 1863, George was transferred to Hawkins Regiment. On 30 Jun 1863, the company was at Camp Mark, Lee Co., VA, but it is not known if he was with them. On 23 Aug 1863, he was on detached duty at Lebanon, VA. The record is missing until 17 Feb 1865 when he was listed as a prisoner of war. On 26 May 1865, George took the oath of allegiance at Chattanooga, TN. He was described as having dark hair, gray eyes, 5' 11" and was a resident of Trimble Co., KY. (Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers - Kentucky. LDS reel 1447493) On 30 Jun 1863, Pvt. George Banks was present with Co. E, 5th Kentucky Mounted Infantry at Cumberland Gap, KY. He had transferred from 4th Kentucky Cavalry.

George was the son of Samuel Jackson Banks and Elizabeth Martin. He married (1) Ann Stockdale on January 15, 1868 in Carroll County, KY, daughter of John and Susanna Stockdale. He married (2) __________ before 1895.

1. Jehu John Banks born February 18, 1869 and died April 3, 1883.

2. Jasper Newton Banks born January 7, 1871 and died August 25, 1947. He married Kitty Bradley on April 28, 1891 in Jefferson County, IN.

3. Jennie B. Banks born about 1873.

4. Samuel Jackson Banks born October 14, 1875 and died September 6, 1956. He married Susan Price Holt.

5. George Washington Banks born October 14, 1875 and died July 28, 1965. He married Nellie Mae Ginn on August 24, 1902.

6. Sarah M. Banks born October 18, 1879 and died April 19, 1900. She married Arthur Taylor on May 17, 1899 in Carroll County, KY.
