Born in New York, Joseph Francis McGeough was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1930. Entering the diplomatic service of the Holy See, at the age of 53 he was appointed Apostolic Internuncio in Ethiopia by Pope Pius XII. Appointed Apostolic Delegate in South Africa on September 17, 1960, he received his episcopal consecration with the Titular Archbishopric See of Hemesa from Pope John XXIII, assisted by Archbishop Diego Venini and Bishop Benigno Carrara. Named Apostolic Nuncio in Ireland on July 8, 1967, ill health forced him to resign and retire to his native New York less than two years later, passing away at the Mary Manning Walsh Home, 1339 York Avenue, after a long illness, aged 67.
