Jacob Rice, aged 91 years, and one of the oldest citizens in western Greene county, died at his home near New Freeport, Monday evening, July 8. His death was due to infirmities incident to his advanced years. Mr. Rice was a son of Josephus and Harriet Bodley Rice, pioneer settlers in Greene county, and was born in Springhill township, where he had spent his entire life. He had followed farming and also raised fine livestock, and was very succcessful, having acquired over a thousand acres of land. Mr. Rice was united in marriage with Miss Mary Morford, whose death occurred five years ago. He was a life-long member of the Pleasant Hill Methodist Episcopal church and for a number of years was an officer of the church, always taking an active interest in the work. Two daughters and one son survive, Miss Elizabeth Rice, at home, Mrs. Lucy Hennen, of Moundsville, W. Va., and John Rice, of New Freeport.
