Nebraska Governor, 1879-1883. He attended Knox College (Galesburg, Illinois), class of 1870, where he studied law. When the Civil War began, he joined the Union Army as a Private in Company H of the 9th Illinois Cavalry. After the war, he resumed his education, was admitted to the bar, and established his legal career in Osceola, Nebraska. In 1874, he became a member of the Nebraska House of Representatives, serving until November 1878, when he was elected as a Republican and the fifth Governor of Nebraska at age 34. While in office, the Slocumb liquor law was enacted, restricting liquor licensing, railroad construction was advanced, and the state's economy improved. After completing his second term in 1883, he retired from political life. He returned to his legal practice and worked in banking until his death at age 83. Nance County, Nebraska, was named after him.
