Ralph H. "Brownie" Brown, 83, of Waycross Drive, passed from this life at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, August 9, 2012, at his home.
Mr. Brown graduated from Westville High School where he played basketball, baseball and participated in track and field. He held the Westville High School basketball scoring record of 43 points in one game for 47 years and he holds a LaPorte County pole vault record of 12' using a bamboo pole. He was inducted into the Westville Athletic Hall of Fame as an individual and also as a member of the 1946-47 basketball team.
Mr. Brown was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as a military police officer for the 101st Airborne Division. He also played basketball for the U.S. Army in Germany for the Southern Military Posts Company Level Conference.
He attended Purdue University, received a BA from Ball State Teachers College and an MA from Ball State University and held an Industrial Cooperative Training Certificate.
Mr. Brown had worked at The Hammer Mill Grain Elevator in Westville, IN, Allis Chalmers Factory and taught for Lebanon Community School Corp. He later taught for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. at Columbus High School, Columbus East High School, McDowell Adult Education Center and Adult Education Woodworking Classes.
He coached elementary and middle school basketball and football.
Mr. Brown's memberships include Beta Chapter of Epsilon Pi Tau, First United Methodist Church, where he served on various church committees and as a trustee, Westville Masonic Lodge No. 192 and Retired Teachers Association. He was past president of Columbus Ostomy Support Group, was a former Republican precinct committee chairperson of Rock Creek Township and was a supporter of Columbus East athletics.
Born in Westville, Indiana, October 24, 1928, Mr. Brown was the son of Charles P. and Marie A. Warnock Brown. He married Vera Jean Tower October 24, 1953.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years; children, Glen (Sue Ellen) Brown of Columbus and Anne-Marie (Lloyd) Chatham of Lafayette; grandchildren, Rachel and Daniel Brown of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert P. and Elizabeth Brown and Howard G. and Frances Brown.
The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Gary Schaar and Rev. Chris Lantz officiating.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Full military rites will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Ralph "Brownie" Brown Memorial Scholarship which is to be given to a Columbus East graduate attending Ivy Tech.
