Charles Orlando Porter
Birth: Apr. 4, 1919
Death: Jan. 1, 2006

US Congressman. Born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, he attended Northwestern University on scholarship and worked at the same time as a special correspondent for the New York Times. With another scholarship, he graduated from Harvard University in 1941, was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in Europe during World War II as a correspondent for the Yank Army weekly news publication. After the war, he received a law degree from Harvard University in 1947 and was a law clerk for Judge William Healey of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco. He was admitted to the Oregon bar in 1948, practiced law in Eugene and was American Bar Associationís Survey of the Legal Profession, (1951-56). In 1957, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-fifth and to the next succeeding Congress, serving until 1961. An unsuccessful candidate for nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 86 in Eugene, Oregon. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
