Grandmaster Victor Cheng was born on August 11, 1947 in Seoul, South Korea. His martial arts training started at an early age and he obtained the rank of 9th degree black belt. Grandmaster Cheng's training included Northern Shaolin/Praying Mantis Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Qigong.

Grandmaster Cheng came to the United States at the age of 19 in 1966. While attending the University of Houston, he taught martial arts for the karate club and at an international martial arts organization. The first martial arts school open to the general public in the city of Houstonwas established in 1967 by Grandmaster Cheng. He also opened the first martial arts supply store, Victor Sports, on South Shepard.

Grandmaster Cheng held martial arts demonstrations through out the city including the Sam Houston Coliseum. During the demonstration, he would kick a cigarette from the mouth of a person using a spinning crescent kick. A feat attempted by at lease one other with painful consequences for the smoker.

Grandmaster Victor Cheng was inducted into the Texas Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2004. He will be remembered for his martial arts, his music and his support of many charities in an attempt to alleviate the sufferings of others. He is survived by his wife, Jenny Su, two sons, Jonathan and Jenson, and his life long friend Master Yun Yang Wang.
