While a mere youth of sixteen joined the fortunes of his native stateand became a member of the First Virginia Battalion of Artillery under the command of Gen Robert E LeeAlthough enduring great privation fortitude he served until the close of the Civil War and was then paroled at Appomattox Court House in 1865. He went to Europe where he remained for eight years, first as a studentat Carlsruhe Baden and afterward at Freiberg, Saxony where he graduated as mining and civil engineer, while at the latter place he entered the German Army by Special permit as a volunteer in the first Uhlan Regiment under the command of Prince John of Saxony and was actively engaged during the Franco Prussian War of 1870-71. Receiving at the close a decoration from the hands of the Empreror William for gallant and distingushed services
