A notice of James' death was found in the June 17, 1945, Sunday morning St. Louis Post Dispatch. "PFC James J. Martin, 25, son of Mrs. Agnes Drennen, 1627A Carroll Street, was killed in action April 26 in Germany. His wife, Mrs. Jean Martin, and two sons live in Muskegon, Michigan."

"Pfc J.J. Martin Dies of Wounds
Pfc. James J. Martin, with Patton's Third army, died of accidental gunshot wounds in Germany April 26, he wife, the former Jean Buchanan, 700 Sixth street, Muskegon Heights, has been informed. He was the father of two children, James, Jr., two and half years old, and Thomas R., one and a half.
Private Martin had been overseas since last October. He was wounded in action November 23, his birthday, and went back into action in December, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Entering service May 4, 1944, Private Martin took basic training at Camp Hood, Texas. The accident victim was born in St. Louis, MO., Nov. 23, 1919 and live in Muskegon five years before entering the army. He was graduated by a St. Louis high school and was employed by Peoples Transport corporation.
Besides his wife and children he leaves his parents Mrs. Agnes Drennen and James Martin, two brothers and one sister, all of St. Louis."
