He was born April 1, 1930, in Manistique, the son of William Andrew and Florence Marie (Roy) Heminger, and attended Manistique area schools.
Lawrence proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a Corporal when he was discharged from the service by 2nd Lt. George Patton, after having earned the Purple Heart and serving as a P.O.W. for 27 months.
On December 27, 1954, he married Glenda Marie Repp at the First Baptist Church in Manistique. They raised their daughters and made their home in the Manistique area.
Lawrence sailed the Great Lakes, drove school bus, worked road construction on I-75 and later worked for Inland Lime & Stone for 26 years, retiring in December of 1989.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Manistique, where he was a former deacon and served on the building committee. Lawrence was also a member of the V.F.W. Post #4420 and American Legion Post 83, both of Manistique, a former member of the Moose Lodge, and was Chaplain for the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.).
Lawrence enjoyed being outdoors gardening, hunting and fishing. He loved to dance and will be fondly remembered for his story telling.
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty nine years, Glenda Repp of Gulliver; daughters Lenore Jean (Darryl) Derouin of Smith River, California and Lisa Ellen (William) Utter of Manistique; son-in-law, Don Reed of Brighton, Michigan, eight grandchildren, Jason, Jared and Matthew (Laurie) Reed, Jaden, Trevon and Robert (deceased) Utter, Taylor Derouin and Charlotte Monroe; three great-grandchildren, Lilly and Layla Utter, Riley Monroe and one on the way.
Furthering surviving is his brother, Raymond (Mary) Heminger of Gulliver; sister-in-law, Audrey Heminger of Manistique; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Laurel Marie Reed; brother, Herbert Heminger; and sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Stan Kusmeric.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. The Veteran's of Schoolcraft County will present military honors at 5:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 6:00 p.m., in the funeral home with Rev. Jay Martin officiating.
Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Manistique
