Shirley Gene Hunter Barber, 80 of Gainesville died May 3 at Whitesboro Health and Rehab Center in Whitesboro.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 PM at the Pavilion in Fairview Cemetery.
History
Shirley Gene Hunter Barber was born on June 9, 1933 in Washington D.C. Her parents were Damie Rexford and Mary Sullivan Hunter. She met her husband of 49 yrs, Raymond "Pete" Barber, in 1953 at Potomac Naval Air Station and they were married November 27 of the same year in Washington D.C.

Shirley Gene Hunter Barber, held a BS from University of North Texas '64 and a MS from West Texas State '73. She retired from teaching at Herford ISD after 19yrs. She was an active member of Eastern Star from the early 70's until her passing. She was an avid card and bridge player her entire adult life. She enjoyed playing the piano and accordion regularly for many years. She volunteered with the Bluebirds and Campfire Girls organizations. She was a Charter Member of Temple Baptist Church, Gainesville, TX. Above all she was a faithful Christian, friend and a loving mother to many.

Survivors
Shirley Gene Hunter Barber is survived by her Son and Daughter-in-law Rex and Denise Barber of Canyon Lake; Daughter Damie Jean Barber of Lubbock; Daughter-in-law Mary Weems of Carrollton; grandchildren Tim Meyer, SSgt Damie Rae Meyer, TJ Bell Cross, and Shelby Weems; one great-grandchild Tanner Meyer; sister-in-laws Lucy VanMatre, Jo Thomson and Jean McCallum; 10 nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends Donnie Gooch and Eva Followill.

She was preceded in death by her parents Damie Rexford & Mary Sullivan Hunter; husband Raymond "Pete" Barber; daughter Dana Barber; and sister Edith Reason.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Baptist Church, 1811 E. California St., Gainesville, TX 76240; or to Whitesboro Health & Rehabilitation Center, 1204 Sherman Dr., Whitesboro, TX 76273.
