United States Navy Rear Admiral. His career in the US Navy lasted 71 years and was highlighted by his command of the famed "USS Constitution" during the War of 1812. His record with the ship in that conflict was outstanding; he never lost a battle and captured a number of British vessels. He was awarded a Gold Medal by Congress for his achievements and commanded the Philadelphia Naval Yard for many years.
